The color authority has released their palette for Spring 2015; Let yourself be inspired by the Pantone hues & translate them for the home. via elledecor

This season there is a move toward the cooler and softer side of the color spectrum. An eclectic, ethereal mix of understated brights, pale pastels and nature-like neutrals take center stage as designers draw from daydreams of simpler times. Remembrances of retro delights, folkloric and floral art, and the magical worlds of tropical landscapes restore a sense of well-being as we head into warmer months. source : pantone

Fun Trend in Tokyo : False Eyelashes

eyelash_02

In 1947, KOJI HONPO developed the first fake eyelashes in Japan, deriving their concept from handmade fake eyelashes worn by geisha. Since then, many improvements have been made and there are many products that are gentle on the skin and feel natural.

When the fashion of foreign models such as Twiggy became popular in Japan in the 1970s, a fake eyelash boom began among women in general. Although the boom cooled down, from the late 1990s the “gal fashion” boom began, mainly among high school-aged girls, in which a large amount of makeup was applied. The impression of eyes that convey strong will is called “mejikara (eye power)”, and girls used their ingenuity to enhance their “mejikara”. In the 2000s, gal fashion also began to spread among women in general, and fake eyelashes became a necessary item. Nowadays, a wide range of women, from high-school girls to office workers, use fake eyelashes. via www.jnto.go.jp

Coleoptera plastic made of beetles by Aagje Hoekstra

Latest from Dutch Design Week : design graduate Aagje Hoekstra has developed a plastic made of pressed insect shells. The material is then heat-pressed to create a plastic, with the oval-shaped shells still visible. “I wanted to keep the structure of the beetle in the plastic so you know where it has come from,” said Hoekstra. She claims the plastic is waterproof and heat resistant up to 200 degrees centigrade.

NEW WAVE in Mexican Design – watch out

5dd6ef6735f9bd2de8c621b7dfc81bb7

The heat is rising in Mexican design, with a buzzing contemporary scene and the hip modernism of its midcentury masters fuelling desire among international collectors. Emma O’Kelly reports from How to Spend It ?

Friedmann is convinced that Mexico – and Latin America more generally – is a creative conquistador in the making: “Designers in Europe, be warned. There is a huge power coming from that area.” Europe may only just be waking up to Mexican designs, but dealers and collectors in the US are tuned in to what’s happening south of their border. Alongside the buzzing contemporary scene, interest in Mexican modernist furniture from the 1930s to the 1960s is snowballing. After the 1910-1920 revolution, Mexico – with its mix of Marxist ideology andmexicanidad (what it means to be Mexican) – was seen as an incubator of modernist thought. Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera were at the height of their powers, adored by the surrealists in Europe; bauhaus refugees, including Hannes Meyer, Michael van Beuren, Josef and Anni Albers and Klaus Grabe, immigrated to Mexico as they fled the Nazi regime. In turn, Mexican designers such as Arturo Pani, Pepe Mendoza and Francisco Artigas were inspired by the coolly rational style of Europe’s best and brightest.

As CNN reported on the supertrees, “It’s pretty innovative stuff. The structures mimic the ecological functions of real trees through their environmentally sustainable features. Some have photovoltaic cells on their canopies to harvest solar energy to light up at night, others are integrated with cooled conservatories and serve as air exhaust receptacles.”
