SALZ

Recognized for his conceptual approach in art, photography and sculpture, Swiss artist Rolf Sachs has unveiled his interior fit out for the Dolder Grand Hotel’s new restaurant called ‘Saltz’. Translating his approach in art into interiors, the restaurant constantly references the swiss landscape by combining distinctive materials including neon lights, salt, rock and felt to manifest a theatrical yet intimate setting.

Strange Hotel, Nagasaki Japan

Welcome to Henn Na Hotel (変なホテル, Strange Hotel), a place where your futuristic dreams are realized ten fold as you are greeted and served by a series of helpful and endearing androids. The concept: to provide a revolutionary customer service experience that is cost effective, environmentally friendly, and a catalyst for further study into robotics and human interaction.

Henn-na Hotel common area

The hotel achieves this in a variety of clever and innovative ways. Upon arrival you will be greeted by two receptionists, a female Japanese speaking humanoid with long, luscious blinking eyelashes, and a bow tie wearing, English speaking dinosaur. Since androids are not particularly skilled at finding lost room keys, guests are also required to record a digital mapping image of their face in order to register and thus there are no room keys.

A rather friendly robot will then escort you to your room and carry your luggage for you, all while rocking out to some tunes blasting from its stereo system.

If you simply wish to store a valuable item then the “Robot Cloak Room” is also available to customers, a gigantic robotic arm that sits in a glass encasement storing and withdrawing boxes for guests on command.

Now that you have arrived at your room courtesy of your new party loving robot pal, you will be greeted by another new robot buddy by the name of “Tuly,” a lamp sized cutie that can answer questions like, “What time is it?” and, “What’s the weather like tomorrow?” as well as turn the lights on and off for you since there are no switches.

Chicago Athletic Association, Chicago

In 1890, a string of the most influential sports and business families, from Spalding to Wrigley, came together to form the Chicago Athletic Association, a hub for the Chicagoan elite and one of the most revered social clubs in the nation. Now, the Henry Ives Cobb-designed building – which received landmark status in 2002 – re-opens its doors to its new life as a 241-room hotel. Restored by local firm Hartshorne Plunkard Architecture and New York-based design team, Roman and Williams, the property – part of John Pritzker’s Commune Hotels and Resorts collection – is a tribute to the club’s storied past, retaining much of it’s original details, from its Venetian Gothic façade, to the stained glass windows, marble staircases and grand ballroom. With a rooftop bar, food concepts that include restaurateur Danny Meyer’s Shake Shack and an interactive game room, no doubt, Chicago’s newest hotel is on track to become the social hub it once was.

Baccarat Hotel, New York

Sought after Paris-based design duo Gilles & Boissier created nearly every piece of furniture for the hotel’s soaring salon-style public spaces, as well as the 114 light-filled rooms and suites of the hotel. Weaving artisanal Baccarat crystal elements throughout, they lavished attention on each surface, be it a sparkling mica-covered vaulted ceiling, silver-leafed wood paneling, pleated-silk walls or a monumental marble table. New York design masters Tony Ingrao and Stephen Sills, respectively, handled the 60 residences and the ground-level contemporary French restaurant, Chevalier.

Namibia’s Kaokoveld desert is home to a slick new camp courtesy of ecotourism specialists, Wilderness Safaris. Catering to the fragile local environment, a series of eight en-suite tents boast a low-impact design that operates completely on solar power. JK PLACE, Rome Italy has won best urban hotel award 2014

It took hotelier Ori Kafri eight years to find the perfect spot to launch his third project. A new hotel in Rome now follows his successful openings in Florence and Capri, and is a stone’s throw from the Spanish steps in a 19th-century building in what used to be the University of Rome. Florentine architect Michele Bonan has outfitted the 30 sumptuous guestrooms with grand canopied rosewood beds, wood-panelled walls and opulent Italian marble bathrooms.
